Founded on the voices of listening to the community, We Exist has been an organisation taking up and delivering safe spaces for people who reside under the trans umbrella.
We Exist, an organisation co-founded by Sophie Gwen Williams and Jo Alloway, two working-class trans people who responded with action to the current systemic issues the trans community face and have been doing it fabulously – You may have spotted their iconic slogan t-shirt ‘F*ck the Cis-Tem’ parading around town which is a personal firm fave of mine!
Since being founded in 2020, the organisation has been popping up and hosting a variety of safe spaces across the nation’s capital, including a community cafe in Shoreditch, studio residencies for trans artists in Holborn, all while raising funds for their all-important trans healthcare fund.
Now a beautiful collective of 5 trans community organisers, We Exist is slaying the game and aims to aid the community in gaining access to healthcare and gender affirming surgeries to increase gender euphoria and bridge pathways in a climate of catastrophic healthcare waiting lists.
As the world locked down, We Exist rose up and came together to host a Trans day of joy for everyone – Collaborating with the likes of Dalston Superstore and Fringe! Queer Arts and Film Fest, trans artists far and wide came to exhibit their work. Whether it was film, performance, music, or anything else, the day was a virtual kaleidoscopic displaying a diverse variety of everything the community has to offer and boy/girl/them, was it uplifting!
Colliding art with a great cause, The organisation’s number one mission is to provide resources and funds to the community in aiding and creating pathways to health care and gender-affirming surgeries and are doing so with the necessary Trans-Healthcare fund. The fund itself has raised upwards of £20,000 and distributes the funds to the trans people in need. Recently the team suffered a great loss when Sophie Gwen Williams recently passed May in 2021. Sophie passed after a five and a half year wait on the referral system in place on the NHS. The team is fighting to challenge the system’s in place and provide solutions to the community.
Platforming trans artists, We Exist have lots coming in the future with upcoming exhibitions, pop-up events and a collaboration with Lucia Blayke’s TransVisions at Dalston Superstore, Every third Wednesday of the month. It’s time to check it out!
Last week the team celebrated the Dawn of Chromatica, I’m ready to go!
