You may have heard the phrase “Protect the Dolls” – but what does it actually mean? 

Personally, I love the word ‘dolls’. To me, it’s a symbol of empowerment, strength, and resilience. When it feels like the world wants to hide you away, remember to stand tall as the fierce doll you are. 

But where does the term come from? While its exact origin isn’t officially documented, we have a pretty good idea. Back in the 20th century – when much of the queer community lived underground – the word “doll” began to emerge in queer and drag circles. Picture it: an underground ballroom filled with the LGBTQ+ community celebrating music, love, and fashion. Drag queens and trans women embody their own vision of femininity, cheering each other on with phrases like “Work it, doll!” and “What’s up, doll?” Historically, “doll” was used as a term of endearment, a way to recognise each other’s beauty, confidence, and shared spirit. 

Fast forward to the 2010s, and the word found new life. Trans women began reclaiming “doll” as their own, referring to one another affectionately in online spaces and social circles. A term once used to describe a delicate, beautiful toy became a celebration of trans femininity, power, and pride. In a world where trans women often face slurs and hate, it’s refreshing to have a word that feels joyful and affirming instead. 

Earlier this year, actor Pedro Pascal brought the phrase “Protect the Dolls” into the global spotlight when he was photographed wearing a T-shirt bearing those exact words. The gesture resonated deeply with the trans community and its allies. The moment held even greater meaning given that Pedro’s sister, Lux Pascal, is a trans woman and an outspoken activist. Through his fashion statement, Pedro not only showed love for his sister but also embraced the language and spirit of trans solidarity.
