If there’s one pub that knows how to keep queer London in high spirits, it’s The Old Ship in Limehouse. This East End gem has been flying the flag for classic cabaret, cosy pints and big festive energy for years, and December is when the place really sparkles. Time Out recently dropped it into their list of London’s top 50 pubs, which simply confirms what we’ve been yelling about for ages… this pub is the real deal.
We’re always banging on about The Old Ship to anyone who’ll listen, and with good reason. Sure, the décor is charmingly old-school, and the atmosphere is famously welcoming, but the real magic is the weekend cabaret. Landlord John Bell has been running the show since 2012, and every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he lines up a fresh roster of drag queens and powerhouse singers who pack out the pub week after week. With a different performer each night, you can visit all month and still get a brand-new show every time.
Take December’s line-up. Mrs Moore, gravel-voiced and gloriously unfiltered, takes the stage on Friday the 19th. And on Saturday the 20th? None other than Sandra, the Whore of Hampstead Heath herself. It’s giving Christmas chaos, it’s giving camp, and the best bit? It’s all free. Just turn up, order a pint and find yourself a stool… maybe not too close to the stage if you’re terrified of being picked on. They can smell fear, darling.
Beyond the cabaret cavalcade, The Old Ship stays open throughout the festive period, with only Christmas Day and Boxing Day off. Expect a lively Christmas Eve party to get you buzzing for Santa’s visit, a full-throttle New Year’s Eve blowout (tickets available at the bar), and all-day opening on New Year’s Day for anyone who needs a hair-of-the-dog or an excuse to abandon Dry January on day one.
