We predict a RIOT! SE1 welcomes it’s newest LGBTQ venue THE RISING!

The Rising, has recently opened its doors — here’s what you can expect…

After 95 years of service, The Rising Sun pub in Elephant and Castle has received a dramatic facelift.

The near two-month refurb turned what was a tired London boozer into a warm welcoming environment. Beer lines were stripped out. Taps replaced. Stage overhauled. Offering updated. And with a brand new outside space ready to relax in, this is definitely the place to be this summer.

It’s clear the co-founders, Simon and Piers, have put a lot of love into updating the venue, with a theme centring around social uprisings and progressive change. The Rising honours queer history, reminding us how our community has evolved over the years.

Queer venues have been consistently closing over the last 10 years, with both day and nighttime options dwindling or becoming more expensive. The Rising is here to change that. This will be a place you can come for a board game in the afternoon, a drag show in the evening or a DJ at night. It’s somewhere to be yourself, without pressure or judgment.

Following a launch night in April with performances from both Son of a Tutu and Ada Campe, The Rising has already become a popular destination and this is set to continue with the announcement of the full calendar.

This month sees the introduction of drag nights on Fridays and Saturdays. Tuesday Gaymes Night and the Wednesday Pub Quiz will begin later in May, but that’s not all — soon to come there’ll be live music, Sunday jazz afternoons and musical theatre nights, too!

Located just a five-minute walk from Elephant and Castle tube, there are direct links to Soho, Clapham, Vauxhall and Shoreditch for you to carry on your night after the 1am closing time.

As pubs and queer spaces close, The Rising is here and ready to serve!
