We caught up with the lovely Alekssandra, the promoter behind the monthly Roma Trans Club at MA1 Bunker London.

Hi Alekssandra, tell us about how Roma started 

A: Hi! First of all, thank you so much for sharing Roma Party’s love story.

I’ve always been very active in the Trans scene in London and love being part of it. I’ve met so many amazing people, and many of them have become real friends. I used to be a photographer and makeup artist and had my own studio behind West Brompton tube station in the Earl’s Court area.

A few years before I even got the studio, I was watching a documentary about Ancient Rome. I had this feeling that if I ever threw a party, I would call it Roma because of how amazing Roman society was.

At the end of 2011, the studio wasn’t doing very well, so I decided to start our iconic party once a month. The first Roma Party was in January 2012.

I have to confess it wasn’t easy at the beginning—with only 3 paying guests on the first night—but slowly, with lots of long hours of daily messaging people, it started to pay off, and we soon moved to a bigger venue.

Tell us about Roma, for those who have not been yet

A: Roma is a mix of play and social party for those 18+. It’s a union of two clubs, combining the social side bar, dance floor, DJ—with the back area, where the atmosphere shifts under low, sexy lighting to something more sensual and sexual.

The most important aspect of the party is the attitude. People need to understand that Roma is free of negative judgment in every way. It’s a place where you’re free to express yourself exactly as you are, without fear of discrimination. We have a strong policy against that.

Can you pick a favourite time at Roma?

A: I can’t really point to one single moment, as we’ve been going for over 12 years, but I still feel butterflies every single month, just like on the first night. My best moment is when I see someone arriving with happiness on their face, knowing our Roma team is working hard to make sure they have the best night of their lives.

Tell us about the exciting things coming up..

A: This coming month, we’re preparing an amazing Halloween night with a few performances. As with every month, we try our best by bringing in different DJs, and the music is incredibly important—it keeps people dancing all night long. I also love how glamorous the girls look. It’s a real effort, and I thank you all for the trust and dedication.

How important do you think Roma and trans-centered nightlife, in general, is to the trans community?

A: Roma plays a very important role in the Trans community, not just as a nightclub where the T community can enjoy and express themselves free of judgment, but also by bringing people together and offering support to those in need.

It’s not just about the party—it’s about helping people, whether by introducing them to lawyers, social workers, or even members of the special Gay Police force. Thankfully, we now have a huge network of professionals working day and night to ensure we’re never alone.

Does it feel like much has changed for the Trans community since you started Roma back in 2012?

A: Oh yes! We are in constant evolution, which is a great thing because it means we’re on the same page as everyone else.

I came to London in 1999, and there’s been a huge change since then. We didn’t have smartphones and all the technology we have today, which has its pros and cons. The internet allows us to reach places we couldn’t have imagined before.
