Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR ) and is observed annually on 20th November to honor the memory of transgender individuals whose lives have been lost to acts of anti-transgender violence.
Established in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, the day initially began as a vigil to remember Rita Hester, a transgender woman murdered in 1998 in the United States. Since then, it has grown into an international day of reflection, observed across the world, including in the UK, where it holds particular significance.
In the UK, today highlights the challenges faced by the transgender community, including rising incidents of hate crimes, social discrimination, and systemic inequalities. It serves as a stark reminder of the violence and prejudice that many transgender people endure daily.
Today will be marked by vigils, memorials, and events that center the voices and experiences of the trans community, fostering awareness and solidarity.
TDOR calls for a commitment to creating a society that is safe, inclusive, and equitable for all, regardless of gender identity. Today not only commemorates those lost but is also here to empower allies and activists to continue advocating for transgender rights and dignity.
