TT: Hi! Tell us a little bit about you.
GOTN: I’m Girl on the Net, a sex blogger and audio porn producer. I record my own sex stories and commission other writers to turn their own smut into audio, which helps make erotica more accessible to people using screenreaders. You’ve probably heard (or read) about audio porn in the news at some point – it’s getting REALLY popular – but one of my biggest bugbears is how it’s so often marketed as ‘for women’. As if only women enjoy listening to a sexy story! I try to commission a range of different voices, telling stories that span different perspectives, kinks and styles: everything from queer steampunk erotica to
non-fiction tales of casual fucks and kink clubs. It’s a joy to host guest writers who help break up the monotony of my own work (predominantly focused on how much I love sucking dick).
TT: What got you into writing about sexual desire?
GOTN: I have always wanted to write and after a breakup with a very filthy ex and a
few annoying dates where men acted like sex was something they had to
‘win’ from me, I figured it would be fun to write a blog where I could be open about the things I love about sex and some of the fun shags I’ve had. So part bragging, part challenging stereotypes, but always rooted in desire. It’s definitely about desire rather than pure pleasure: the anticipation before a fuck and the nerdy analysing afterwards is part and parcel of the joy for me.
TT: What advice would you give to someone wanting to dip their toes into the world of writing about sexuality?
GOTN: Start immediately! I mean it. Go open up a draft somewhere — the notes app on your phone, or voice notes if you want to dictate — and just begin. Capture what you want to say — the first sentence, a smutty line that floated into your head, a concept or a title.
The hardest part of writing is getting started. The second hardest part is silencing that voice in the back of your head that tells you you’re not good enough. But your words are important precisely because no single person will ever be good enough to capture the infinite joy of sex. Together, we can map the myriad experiences that make up the vast landscape of human sexuality, from the sublime through to the ridiculous.
TT: You’re appearing at Eroticon next month. What exactly is that?
GOTN: It’s an incredible weekend for sex bloggers, erotic writers and other creative types. Basically, if you’re in the business (or hobby) of making sexy stuff, it’s for you. Two days of talks and workshops covering a range of things from how to make money from sexy content (and market your work) through discussions of the industry landscape (hello censorship!) and practical workshops on how to improve your writing skills to make your work more inclusive and beautiful. There are even chilled sessions where you can learn to make your own kink equipment. It’s a great place to meet other erotic creatives whose work I admire online. There will be fangirl-ing in the pub after the talks.
TT: And who’s talking there?
GOTN: So many amazing people! Blake, who runs Dreams of Spanking and writes beautifully on the intersection of kink and queerness. Dr Eleanor Janega is going to be speaking about the importance of sex history. Dr Caroline Are (aka @bloggeronpole) who has researched algorithmic banning of sexual content. I’m doing a workshop on how to perform your work and a talk on using Patreon to build your income and of course, you’re bringing a talk about sluttery and abandoning shame (fuck yeah!). I also love the erotic readings on Sunday afternoons when any attendee has the opportunity to read some of their own work aloud. It’s a great way to find new people to follow.
TT: When and where is Eroticon happening?
GOTN: It’s in Camden on the 10th and 11th of June (though the first social is on Friday the 9th and it’s fun to meet some people in the pub before the talks kick off on Saturday!).
TT: What’s next for you?
GOTN: After the excitement of Eroticon, I’ll be commissioning more audio porn
in July, so if any readers have sex blogs (or erotic stories gathering dust somewhere and crying out for a wider audience) I am very keen to commission more, especially LGBTQ stories. Keep an eye on my blog for info at the start of July!
