If your idea of a good night out involves a bit of chaos, a lot of camp, and something that might make your Catholic school teacher sweat, then JEEZUS! needs to be firmly on your radar.
After tearing through last year’s Edinburgh Fringe and picking up the UNTAPPED Award along the way, this high-energy, gloriously irreverent musical is landing in London for a limited run at New Diorama Theatre.
Set in 1990s Peru against the backdrop of political unrest and dictatorship, the show follows Jesús, an altar boy preparing for his first communion. Straightforward enough, until it isn’t. Because somewhere between faith, fear, and adolescence, he starts feeling something decidedly unholy about the man on the cross.
From there, things spiral, in a good way. Expect a collision of Catholic guilt, queer awakening, and Latin heat, all wrapped up in a surreal, high-camp musical that doesn’t hold back.
At the centre of it are creators and performers Sergio Antonio Maggiolo and Guido Garcia Lueches, who juggle multiple characters while taking us on what’s being described as an “unrepentantly queer journey to ultimate enlightenment”. It’s bold, a bit chaotic, and very much intentional.
Musically, it’s just as all over the place, again, by design. You’re getting everything from Latin pop bangers and salsa to South American folk sounds and clubby, Bad Bunny-esque beats, all played live on stage. It’s giving sweaty, euphoric, slightly unhinged energy, and we’re into it.
But beneath the glitter and the chaos, there’s something sharper going on. The show digs into colonialism, sexuality, religion, and the stories queer people inherit, especially when faith has been both a comfort and a weapon. It’s not mocking religion, it’s wrestling with it. And doing so with humour, honesty, and just enough bite.
New Diorama Theatre clearly knows it’s onto something here. They’re calling it sexy, ferocious and hilarious, and from what we’ve seen so far, that tracks.
If you like your theatre neat and polite, this probably isn’t for you. If you like it messy, provocative and just a bit filthy, you’re going to have a very good time indeed!
