Saving Mozart has arrived in London and is shining a light on the undersung figures in the composer’s life.
A pair of wise women once sang (or rather belted out) that behind every great man stands a great woman, and this is the case with a certain Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Yes, he composed more than 800 works (including some of the most influential pieces in the Western canon) during his short life, but he would’ve struggled to do so without the encouragement and assistance of some powerful women in his life.
That’s the subject of Saving Mozart, a new musical by Charli Eglington that’s currently showing at The Other Palace. Its London run is highly anticipated after it received five-star reviews at its premiere earlier in the year in Gmunden, Austria (close to the birthplace of the prodigious composer). Excitement only increased after the announcement of a highly talented cast, including Jack Chambers as Mozart himself, Aimie Atkinson as his sister Nannerl, and Erin Caldwell as his wife Constanze.
Countless pages have been written about Mozart’s genius, but not so much about the vital support system that let this talent flourish — you can right that wrong at The Other Palace this month.
