Billy Porter is a natural performer, as his collection of an Emmy, Grammy and three Tony awards prove — not to mention his many show-stopping fashion moments on the red carpet.

The Hollywood icon is in the director’s chair this Summer with a new play exploring a couple’s conflict over activism and inaction with his UK directorial debut at Soho Theatre.

Written by Harrison David Rivers, The Bitter Earth is a new play about two men — Jesse, a gay black writer and Neil, a white activist. The script follows the pair from their first encounter at the Million Hoodie March in 2012 to their early dates and a point deep into their long-term relationship. As the story progresses, a backdrop of continuing political unrest and their respective action and inaction proves to be a recurring thorn in their sides.

“Harrison David Rivers has written a searingly poignant and necessary play about love and
loss through the lens of the fraying American Democratic experiment,” says Porter. “It’s simple yet complex, direct and filled with compassion all at once. I’m thrilled to be a part of bringing this very special piece to life.”

He’s also lucky to have a fantastic pair of actors to fill the two main roles. Omari Douglas is taking on the part of Jesse — many will recognise him from his memorable turn in Russell T Davies It’s A Sin, but you might have also caught him in recent stage shows, such as Cabaret at the KitKat Club and Constellations alongside Russell Tovey. Douglas will be joined by Alexander Lincoln, best known for his time on Emmerdale as Jamie Tate and his leading role in cult gay rugby drama In From The Side.

Tickets to the show are currently on sale and given the talent involved, it perhaps wouldn’t be a bad idea to secure a seat sooner rather than later, especially if you like a night at the theatre with lots to say about the state of the world.
