Inspired by Peter Scott-Morgan’s incredible life, this brand-new musical portrays a superhuman response to a life-changing condition.
We’re living in an age of incredible technological advancements in the fields of robotics and biomechanics. One figure we have to thank for that is Peter Scott-Morgan.
Having studied the subject all of his life, the scientist fully embraced the power of robotic technology after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2017, describing himself as ‘The Human Cyborg’ in the process — or Peter 2.0, as the title of his 2021 book put it.
With the help of his husband, he was able to outlive the life expectancy given to him post-diagnosis and leave a strong legacy for those affected by MND and other disabilities. Sadly,
he died in 2022, but Scott-Morgan’s
life acts as the inspiration for a new musical written and directed by Chris Burgess that’s opening at Southwark Playhouse later this month.
Supersonic Man follows Adam and Darryl, a young couple enjoying carefree lives in Brighton’s gay scene, but this harmony is disrupted when Adam is diagnosed with
a life-changing condition. Like Scott-Morgan, he decides to look to robotics to keep squeezing as much out of life as possible.
The Southwark Playhouse has a great track record when it comes to putting interesting and innovative queer stories up on stage and this looks set to be another worthy addition to the canon.
