London’s LGBTQ+ arts scene just got another reason to celebrate. Queer Theatre, the award-winning production company championing queer stories and new creative voices, has unveiled a vibrant spring season packed with play readings, cabaret, community events and fresh opportunities for artists to connect.
If you’ve ever wondered where the next generation of queer playwrights, performers and theatre-makers are honing their craft, chances are it’s here. Queer Theatre has built a reputation for creating a space that is ambitious, welcoming and proudly unapologetic in its support of LGBTQ+ talent.
And this season? It’s bursting with energy.
Patron Stephen Fry has already thrown his support behind the programme, praising the company’s commitment to championing “exquisitely new voices” and celebrating queer storytelling in all its forms.
A Season Celebrating Queer Voices
At the heart of the programme is the much-loved Queer Play Reading Club, where writers, performers and theatre lovers gather to explore new work in a supportive and creative environment.
Each session pairs open script feedback with a reading of a published play and a conversation with guest playwrights, giving attendees the chance to dive deep into the craft while expanding their own library of queer theatre texts. The club runs in partnership with Nick Hern Books, and participants even leave with a copy of the play discussed that evening.
The upcoming readings include:
- 21 April – Foam by Harry McDonald A gripping drama inspired by a true story, tracing one man’s journey into far-right extremism across the turbulent skinhead and gay scenes of the 1970s and 80s.
- 19 May – Lavender, Hyacinth, Violet, Yew by Coral Wylie A witty and tender coming-of-age story about rediscovering identity through gardening, first seen at the Bush Theatre.
- 16 June – Four Play by Jake Brunger A sharp, funny exploration of love, sex and the shifting rules of an open relationship.
If you’re a writer, performer or simply someone who loves a brilliant script, this is exactly the kind of creative playground London needs more of.
Enter the Luvvie Era
Spring also sees the launch of Luvvie: Gods and Monsters, a brand-new cabaret club night that promises to bring together West End stars, fringe performers and the next generation of theatre makers under one fabulously chaotic roof.
The inaugural event lands on 8 May and invites guests to arrive in Greek mythology-inspired costume, celebrating the gloriously queer stories woven throughout ancient legend. Think gods, monsters, drama and probably a few divine costume choices along the way.
Alongside the performances, the night will feature an industry auction raising funds to support Queer Theatre’s ongoing work developing LGBTQ+ productions.
Community Beyond the Stage
Queer Theatre’s season isn’t just about performance. It’s about building a community that supports creativity in every direction.
New for this year is Walk & Talk, a series of sober, outdoor meet-ups designed to give LGBTQ+ creatives a chance to recharge and connect beyond nightlife. The programme kicks off with a hike at Box Hill in April, followed by trips to Leith Hill in May and Arundel Park in June.
Back in London, the company’s beloved OutCast Showcase returns in March, offering emerging performers a platform to present new work in front of agents, directors and casting professionals. Later in the season, Summer Variety Night promises a joyful explosion of drag, comedy and musical theatre.
A Hub for Queer Theatre Makers
Alongside these events, Queer Theatre continues its weekly acting classes at The Two Brewers in Clapham, open to performers of all levels, and its acclaimed Show People Podcast, which regularly features some of the biggest names in theatre and screen.
Taken together, it’s clear this isn’t just a theatre company. It’s a hub. A meeting point. A creative home for queer storytellers across London.
