Happy Pride Month! Our Pride Month Series is BACK for another year! It’s time to celebrate the fabulous people who make up our glorious LGBTQ+ community!
During Pride Month we will be highlighting those people. Today, we ask Rogerio Alves from Bespoke fetish brand Libidex, what Pride means to them!
What does Pride mean to you?
Pride to me, simply means freedom of expression in a safe environment with like-minded people. And day to literally paint the town in all colours of the very diverse LGBTQ+ community rainbow.
Tell us about your first Pride experience, what & where was it?
My first Pride was a mixture of a school boy’s first trip abroad excitement but also an utter and complete unparalleled happiness and joy. The year was 1995 in London it was a perfect warm summer day if my memory serves me right and a visiting friend from Brazil picked up Peter Tatchell at Heaven on Pride night. We all ended up at 4 am in Old Compton Street mustering as much as we could from such a memorable night.
What is your favourite part of Pride?
Meeting new people and making new friends. The diversity of the people the sheer scale and the magnitude of it all.
Do you have a favorite Pride memory?
Yes, the memories of me and my ex-bf Simon, at our first Pride in 1995, we were utterly happy and so in love, like only the young and adventurous are capable of. A loving relationship that lasted for a blissful 7 years and ended only days after Pride 2001.
Why do you think Pride is still important?
Pride is vital to send the message that there is still a lot of work to be done. That queer people deserve the same respect and rights as everyone else. Not only in developed countries but the whole world. Brazil is still a world leader in trans people homicide. We can’t rest on our past laurels. This is no time to be complacent. Especially in an era where the Bolsanaros of the world can be elected by extreme right voters undoing a lot of our hard work regarding gay and trans equality. We MUST keep up the fight!
