Our pick of the Ten Best LGBTQ+ Cabaret Events: May 2023

Our very own cabaret aficionado Jason Reid peruses the upcoming cabaret events every month so you don’t have to, and picks his cream of the crop for Gay London Life.

A glorious month brimming with myriad cabaret and drag events lies ahead. In fact, it looks set to be one the busiest Mays in recent times with back-to-back bank holiday weekends plus Charlie getting crowned, of course.

LGBTQ+ London, you beauty, where there’s something for everyone…

Back to the 80’s and Showtunes Jukebox at Ye Olde Rose & Crown

Every Sunday, from 5pm

If you’re in or around Greenwich, this is the place to be on Sundays. Top cabaret artists perform musical theatre or 80s numbers (alternating) and the welcome is always warm.

1 Crooms Hill, Greenwich, SE10 8ER

DLR: Cutty Sark

Moore Madness with Mrs Moore or Amy LaQueefa at Two Brewers

Every Monday, (except bank holidays), from 8pm

Camp chaos and cheap drinks with the always outrageous and entertaining Mrs Moore and Amy LaQueefa (alternating). Expect rousing renditions of musical theatre and pop numbers, plus good-natured bawdy banter. Two Brewers is one of the capital’s leading drag bars, located slap bang in the middle of Clapham and served by several public transport links. Entry is free all night on Mondays.

114 Clapham High Street, SW4 7UJ

May The Fierce Be With You – A Star Wars Celebration 2023 at Royal Vauxhall Tavern

Thursday 4th, from 7pm

An absolute must for fans of Star Wars, and gay geeks in general. Featuring a galaxy of tremendous cabaret stars: Carrot, Reece Connolly, Yshee Black, Me the Drag Queen, Lilly Snatchdragon, Benjamin Louche, Mark Anthony and Oedipussi Rex. Phew! That’s quite the line-up. Grab tickets while you can. On the night they will also be raising funds for independent charity Cabaret VS Cancer.

372 Kennington Lane, SE11 5HY

Tube: Vauxhall

Coronation Sunday Matinee at Arch Clapham

Sunday 7th, from 4pm

As part of Arch’s mega coronation bank holiday weekend celebrations, that great Aussie dazzler Karla Bear will be entertaining the masses in her own flawless and inimitable way. Expect big songs and laughs, delicious cocktails, and a HUGE PARTY.

Arch 642, Voltaire Road, London, SW4 6DH

Tube: Clapham North

Saffron Slayter at The Old Ship

Sunday 7th, from 9.30pm

Head down to East London’s finest no-nonsense gay boozer for a fabulous show from the original singing ‘Slayter Sister’. Guv’nor John and his team are consummate pros when it comes to hospitality. This pub is an institution. Long live The Old Ship!

17 Barnes Street, E14 7NW

DLR: Limehouse

Astro’s Coronation Bukkake Fun-Fest at The Glory

Monday 8th, from 7.30pm

This definitely takes the prize for most unexpected but hilarious title for a coronation event. It caught my attention straight away, which is aways a good thing. And I’m sure Charlie would approve. Cabaret icons Astro, Virgin X and Cakeboi will pay homage to Queen Cowmilla with a night of high brow musical entertainment, a live milking of queen Cowmilla, queer political comedy, sing-along numbers, and the private school classic “the soggy biscuit game” played with an effigy of beloved queen consort Charles Windsor. Sounds absolutely bonkers and bloody spiffing (or maybe that should be spaffing).

281 Kingsland Rd, London E2 8AS

Overground: Haggerston

Get Toasted with Marsha Mallow and Miles Elliott at Halfway to Heaven

Friday 12th, from 8.30pm

Two first-rate cabaret artists and a venue that always brings the end of week party energy, makes for a perfect night out with friends or flying solo (because you’re sure to get chatting to people). Expect glorious high camp numbers from Marsha and smooth as silk soul from Miles. Both artists are blessed with stunning singing voices and charming personalities. You won’t be disappointed.

7 Duncannon Street, WC2N 4JF

Tube: Charing Cross

Kings Of Clubs at Royal Vauxhall Tavern

Wednesday 17th, from 7pm

The success of this dedicated drag king night, which now takes place every month at The RVT, is a testament to the hard work of its producer/host King Frankie Sinatra and the creativity of its artists. May’s edition features performances from Mr Wesley Dykes, Shardeazy Afrodisiak, Loui Von Dini, Dandy Issues, Goo and Fabio Lezonli. Excellent value for money.

Once Upon A Drag Queen 2 at Two Brewers

Friday 19th, from 7pm

This sounds like a lot of fun. A cabaret centred around Disney movies; and who doesn’t revel in a spot of Disney escapism? Hosted by drag diva Tiana Biscuit, with a cast of practically perfect cabaret stars.

114 Clapham High Street, SW4 7UJ

Tube: Clapham North

Ella Vaday’s Elluva Comedy Night at The London LGBTQ+ Standup Comedy Festival at 21Soho

A special bumper queer comedy night. Hosted by Ella Vaday (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 4 finalist), with sets from Stephen Bailey (Live at the Apollo), Russell Arathoon, Alison Zrada, James Barr, Mark Bittlestone, Maddie HW and Iffy. Sure to be a scream!
