Avery Residential founder Thomas Avery has helped people find homes across London. We caught up with him to talk about community, belonging and why Pride still matters in one of the world’s most diverse cities.
Q: You’ve worked in London property for nearly 20 years. Has your idea of ‘home’ changed over that time?
A: Definitely. Home is no longer just somewhere to live. It’s about community, friendships, feeling comfortable in your own skin and having a sense of belonging.
Q: Do you think London is still a good city for LGBTQ+ people?
A: Absolutely. London is one of the most open and diverse cities in the world. Some things have changed over the years, but there’s still an incredible sense of community here if you’re willing to go out and find it.
Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing LGBTQ+ Londoners today?
A: I’d probably say loneliness and connection. We’re more connected online than ever before, but many people are still searching for genuine friendships, relationships and a real sense of community.
Q: Why do you think Pride is still important in London today?
A: Because everyone deserves to feel seen, accepted and like they belong. Pride celebrates how far we’ve come, recognises those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today and reminds us why community still matters.
Q: As an LGBTQ+ business owner, what would you say to landlords or sellers thinking about working with Avery Residential?
A: We’re a modern, independent business that believes property is about people first. Whether you’re a landlord, seller, buyer or tenant, everyone should feel welcomed, respected and able to be themselves.
Q: What do you love most about living in London?
A: The people. London is a city where you can find your tribe, meet people from every walk of life and constantly discover something new about yourself and the world around you.
