From a first-out queen to a global drag superstar, Vanessa “Miss Vanjie” Mateo has become one of the most recognisable faces in the Drag Race universe. Ahead of headlining the Drag Stage at As One In The Park this July, she spoke to Gay London Life about that famous catchphrase, London crowds and what festival-goers can expect.
You went from being first out on RuPaul’s Drag Race to becoming one of the most recognisable queens in the world. Did you ever expect that exit moment to change everything?
No I didn’t. I was so nervous being first out and had no idea what was going to happen after. There was no way I could predict where that exit line was going to take me. Saying “Miss Vanjie” three times changed my life.
That “Miss Vanjie… Miss Vanjie…” line is still everywhere. Do you love it or are you slightly haunted by it at this point?
I love it! It’s my name, so it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s a good haunting. It’s like reminiscing on a good story with childhood friends.
You came back stronger every time, especially on Season 11 and All Stars. What did you learn about yourself?
Every time I came back I was more sure of myself and who I was. I feel like I’ve grown up on the show. I’m always grateful to be invited back into the Drag Race world.
Your performances are known for being high-energy and dance-led. How would you describe a Miss Vanjie show to someone who’s never seen you live?
I would say Tasmanian Devil from Puerto Rico.
You’ve toured all over the world. What’s the wildest crowd you’ve ever performed for?
London! London! London! I love performing there and I’ve done New Year’s there twice. London crowds are amazing. Y’all know how to cut up for sure!
You’ve also crossed into television with shows like All Star Shore and 24 Hours of Love. Do you see yourself moving further into mainstream entertainment?
Yes! I hope so. I’m knocking on all the doors. Maybe Dancing With The Stars, The Traitors, shoot, I’d even do House of Villains.
You’re headlining As One In The Park this summer. What made you say yes?
I love performing in London and I’ve never had the chance to do an event quite like this. I’m excited and counting down the days. I saw some of the line-up and was honoured to be part of such an amazing festival.
London crowds can be a little opinionated. What can we expect from your set?
Child, I live in LA and they’re just as opinionated! I’m planning as we speak. Definitely expect some Rih Rih.
Pride season is packed with events. What makes As One stand out?
This one has a fierce line-up, so I’m going to pull every stop I can think of.
Who are you most excited to see at the festival?
Pabllo Vittar! Ahhhh!
For anyone seeing you for the first time at As One, what’s the one thing they need to be ready for?
We’re going to cut up! Y’all get ready for yelling on the mic and a celebration!
If you could give pre-Drag Race Vanjie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don’t overthink. You got this. And keep being you!
