Meet The Manager : Nathan from Ye Old Rose & Crown, Greenwich

We popped down to one of our favourite corners of Greenwich and had a quickfire chinwag with Nathan, the lovely general manager of Greenwich boozer, Ye Olde Rose and Crown

From the outside, Ye Olde Rose and Crown has the sort of traditional appearance that makes it look like the sort of watering hole your dad would visit to watch the rugby on a Saturday afternoon, but show your face in there one evening and you’ll find that it’s a veritable haven of campery. All throughout the week, you can’t move for drag queens gracing the stage, show tunes blasting from the speakers and a wide range of LGBTQ+ folk enjoying a pint or two. We caught up with the general manager Nathan to hear a little more about what’s happening there soon.

Hey Nathan, so how long have you been at Ye Olde Rose and Crown?

I returned to the pub in July last year after ten years away. The first period I worked at the Rose started in 2002 before I left for Covent Garden in 2011.

What do you think makes it unique?

What I have always loved about this pub is its sense of community. People of all ages come in and you get every kind of character in here, too. There are always a lot of laughs going on and the team here is amazing. We’re all one crazy dysfunctional family but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’ve found Greene King to be very supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, too.

What’s happening there during April?

A lot. As well as the usual Tuesday night bingo with Miss Aisles, there’s a quiz night on Wednesday, show tunes on Thursday and a Sunday roast, as well. We’ll have a lot of drag acts performing throughout the month, including Mayumi Fukiko, Candy Heals, Ella Gant, Allysa Van Delle, Vanity Von Glow, Ava Cardo, Miss Facetious and the outrageous Poppadom Shake.

Are there any other exciting plans in the pipeline?

We have a sports day coming up in June to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and another big one in August the annual Michael Joyce charity drag race. This one means a lot to me personally and we’re gonna make it a night to remember. Drag queens or kings will be running around the centre of Greenwich for their chosen charity and we will also have various acts on stage. These events really bring the community together.

Name four people, dead or alive, you’d love to share a bottle of White Zinfandel and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps with?

Definitely Kylie. Missy Elliott too as I think she’s amazing and really, really talented, just like Queen Latifah as well. The last one would be Linda Henry, as she’s great as Shirley in Eastenders.

What’s your favourite thing to do in Greenwich?

I like to take my dog Lulu for a walk around the park to unwind after a busy day, especially when it’s nice and hot.

Tell us your karaoke song.

When it comes to karaoke, I’m tone-deaf and I wouldn’t want to torture anybody with my voice. My favourite song is probably Burning Up by Kylie.

Ye Olde Rose and Crown is situated at .1 Crooms Hill, SE10 8ER,
