David Raven, affectionately known as Maisie Trollette, Britain’s oldest performing drag queen, passed away today at 91 . A cornerstone of the LGBTQ+ community, Maisie’s illustrious career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on the drag scene and beyond.
Born on August 15, 1933, in St Ives, Cornwall, David Raven moved with his family to Suffolk shortly thereafter. He initially trained as a grocer, publican, and waiter, working at Gorleston Super Holiday Camp in Great Yarmouth, where he encountered showbiz personalities like Lonnie Donegan and Matt Monro. At 26, David came out and relocated to London in 1960, immersing himself in the vibrant entertainment scene.
David met James Court in London, and together they formed the drag duo “The Trollettes.” Their unique blend of live performances and charisma quickly won them a talent competition at The Black Cap in Camden Town. The name “Maisie Trollette” was coined following a playful remark by David’s life partner, Don Coull, who suggested adding more glamour to their act, leading to the fusion of “troll” with the diminutive “-ette.”
The late 1970s saw David and Don relocating to Brighton, drawn by its liberal, gay-friendly atmosphere. They purchased a guesthouse on St George’s Terrace with their winnings from the football pools, cementing their place in the community. Maisie became a regular performer at venues like The Royal Vauxhall Tavern and was integral to Brighton Pride since its inception in 1973.
In 2022, the documentary “Maisie” offered an intimate glimpse into David’s life, capturing his preparations for his 85th birthday performance. The film also highlighted the meeting between Maisie and Darcelle XV, the world’s oldest drag queen from the USA, showcasing the camaraderie and occasional rivalries within the drag community.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, where Maisie frequently performed, expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Maisie Trollette. David Raven was a pioneering figure in British drag performance.”
