Now available to stream across multiple platforms, Playing Around (also known as Soy German Andres Yanez (G.A.Y)) brings all ten episodes of the Colombian LGBTQ+ mini-series together as one binge-worthy collection. Funny, heartfelt and packed with the awkward realities of modern dating, it’s an easy watch that feels surprisingly universal.
At the centre of the story is 29-year-old Germán Andrés. He works in a call centre, still lives with his mum, is proudly gay and, despite plenty of dates, has never managed to find a relationship that sticks. With his 30th birthday fast approaching, he becomes convinced he needs to find “the one” before the milestone arrives, or risk becoming another casualty of modern dating.
Of course, nothing is ever that simple.
As Germán navigates a world of polyamory, situationships, ghosting and endless mixed signals, his search for love becomes both hilarious and painfully familiar. Whether you’ve ever refreshed a dating app hoping for a reply, questioned your life choices after another disappointing date, or wondered if everyone else has somehow figured relationships out, you’ll probably see a little of yourself here.
The series strikes a balance between laugh-out-loud comedy and genuine warmth, celebrating queer friendships just as much as romance. It never loses sight of the fact that finding your people can be just as important as finding your partner.
Leading the project is James Camargo De Alba, who not only stars as Germán Andrés but also directs and writes the series. His performance gives the show plenty of charm, making Germán an easy character to root for, even when his own insecurities threaten to get in the way.
Joining him are Julio PachĂłn and Obeida Benavides, helping bring to life a colourful cast that keeps the comedy moving across all ten episodes.
Originally produced in Colombia, Playing Around offers something refreshingly different from many mainstream LGBTQ+ comedies. It embraces universal dating dilemmas through a distinctly Latin American lens, proving that awkward first dates, overthinking text messages and wondering whether love is just around the corner are experiences that cross every border.
