Jason Reid’s Cabaret Interview with LUSPINDA

If you’ve never seen the circus element of cabaret in a live setting, then you have been sorely missing out and should make a beeline to the new show from my featured artist this month. Hula Hoop virtuoso and five times Guinness world record breaker Luspinda is the
dazzling ringleader of The Drag Circus…

Whenever I’ve seen you hula hoop I’ve been completely spellbound. How and why did you get into circus, and was there a catalyst that promoted you to take up hula hoop in particular?

Thank you! In my early twenties I was looking for a way to keep fit and get endorphins that didn’t aggravate an ankle injury and I came across a hoop fitness class. This quickly escalated into learning more hoop tricks and before long I was spending all of my spare time destroying my furniture by throwing hoops around my little flat. I got addicted to the satisfying feeling of learning new tricks, and as I got more skilled I was asked to train with the hula hoop troupe that I now coach; The Majorettes. I didn’t plan on becoming a circus
artist, it happened by accident. I have a biomedical science degree and was planning on that guiding Luspinda

life in ways I could never have imagined, including become a fives times world record breaker.

Tell us a bit about the new show and why you’ve decided to marry circus with drag.

Artists that combine both drag and circus have never really had a home as such on the circuit. The Drag Circus is bringing together those that combine both drag and circus arts in their acts. In bringing everyone together it not only creates a spectacular show, it allows us to build more of a drag circus community and mentorship for drag artists who want to explore circus or circus artists who want to explore drag. You can expect danger, shock and campery. The lineup includes hand balancing international superstar Force Majeure, genius
drag clown Richard Melanin the Third, sideshow sensation i-Gemini, and the triumphant comeback of Loui von Dini. Also, we aren’t using real animals in our circus, but we have found a fun alternative.

What’s your general experience as a cabaret artist who is bisexual?

At the very beginning of my journey, I often felt like I had to prove that I was ‘queer enough’ to even be in the spaces I was performing in. That all changed once I met people in the queer cabaret community and I realised I wasn’t alone. Before long I had so many bisexual friends which is something I never had before. Cabaret has given me a safe space to explore my bisexual identity and create acts that celebrate it — I will never forget the first time I performed my Bi Pride hoop act on the RVT stage; the roar of the audience when I waved the flag was the most validating and special experience. Every time I perform that act I have people tell me it resonated with them and made them feel seen — representation matters and it is a real privilege to provide that.

Your ultimate drag icon?
My best friend, Dolly Trolley. I wouldn’t be the artist or person I am today without her friendship, guidance and inspiration. She brings so much energy, thought and talent to every performance and shows so much kindness and support to everyone in the cabaret community.

Life motto?
Life is not a spectator sport.

The Drag Circus is on Sunday 23rd April at Two Brewers, 114 Clapham High St, SW4 7UJ
