Jason Reid’s Cabaret Interview: This January Jason chats to rising star Violetta J’Adore

Happy new year, cabaret-lovers! I’m starting 2024 in suitably fabulous fashion by getting to know more about a drag artist who’s on the rise and has been on my radar of late; let’s meet Violetta J’Adore…

Who is Violetta J’Adore?

Violetta J’Adore is a Greek drag artist who is taking London by storm, one lip-sync at a time. I am a performer that is extremely passionate about my art and is always trying to build new platforms for queer artists.

How did you get into drag performance?

Drag queens often get born during Halloween or Pride; for me, it was neither. On the first day of me doing drag, my job was to hand out flyers promoting clubs. Shortly after I got to be on stage and that was really the point when I realised that drag was what I was meant to do.

Describe your performance style in three words.

My performance style in three words is: powerful, emotional, sexy.

Tell us briefly about the Haus of Duchess and what it means to you.

The Haus of Duchess is the drag house I’m a member of which was formed by my drag mother and Greek drag royalty, Doukissa. This drag family means a lot to me, because it is exactly that — a family, a group of friends that I know will always be there for me. My drag mother, and my drag sister, Tammy Tsanaka, are two of my closest friends and I’m honoured to call them family.

Fave song or routine to perform right now?

I am a theatre kid who is OBSESSED with musicals, and this clearly translates to my song choices. I mean, I’m the queen that will lip-sync to the full 8-minute-long scene of Rose’s Turn by Gypsy and will act my heart out while doing it.

Who are your drag idols?

My drag idols are the performers that have really paved the way for drag artists like me. To name a few: William Dorsey Swann, Danny La Rue, Crystal LaBeija, and, of course, RuPaul.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.

Something that not a lot of people know about me is that apart from being a make-up artist and drag performer, I am soon to graduate from university and be a psychologist.

Proudest professional achievement to date?

A few months ago, I had the honour to represent the UK and Greece at the first ever European preliminary of the Miss Continental pageant, the Queen of the North Continental that took place in Rotterdam. It was a crazy journey that took weeks of planning and preparing. I could not have made it without my beautiful husband who was more than supportive in every step of the way.

Away from the stage, what makes you happy?

This might sound weird, but the answer would be planning the moments that I will be back on stage. Drag is my life, and the stage is my happy place.

New Year’s resolution/s?
My resolutions are simple: more drag, more shows, more opportunities, more travelling, more friends, and more happiness. I just want more of what life has to offer.

Violetta J’Adore performs with Yshee Black every Friday at City Of Quebec,12 Old Quebec Street. London. W1H 7AF
