London’s fetish scene is heading somewhere slightly unexpected this spring. Not a dark basement club, not a midnight dungeon, but the grand halls of Bishopsgate Institute.
On Saturday 18 April, Fetish Unlimited takes over the entire building for a six-hour celebration of fetish culture, history and community. Running 2pm to 8pm, it’s part exhibition, part talks programme, part social gathering, and honestly, one of the most fascinating scene events popping up in London this year.
And just to clear up the obvious question. This isn’t a play party. Think culture, conversation and curiosity, not ‘antics’.
A Deep Dive Into London’s Fetish History
The event is curated by Brew Hunter, a well-known figure in London’s leather scene and the man behind the influential fetish night MASTERY. This time, he’s teaming up with the UK Leather and Fetish Archive to open the doors on a huge slice of fetish history that most people never get to see.
Expect rare magazines, posters, photographs and artefacts from decades of leather and fetish culture, many of which have been tucked away in archives until now.
If you’ve ever wondered where the scene came from, this is basically the crash course.
Talks, Films, Installations and a Bit of Dancefloor
The Great Hall hosts the main programme for the afternoon, kicking things off with a guided meditation called Into the Darkroom.
From there, Archivist Stefan Dickers dives into the strange world of collecting vintage porn, while tattoo historian Matt Lodder explores the history of fetish body piercing in the UK.
Brew Hunter also hosts a couple of talks himself, unpacking the language and culture of fetish in a way that’s surprisingly thoughtful and often very funny.
Wander through the rest of the building, and you’ll find exhibitions, installations and archive material spread across multiple rooms. There’s even a retro Soho-style screening room showing vintage XX films, plus hands-on displays where you can get up close with old fetish magazines, posters and gear.
And because this is still London, the day wraps up with DJ AlexMaxx taking over the decks for a little something called Fetish on the Dancefloor.
What To Wear?
Honestly, whatever you want.
Fetish gear is encouraged if you fancy leaning into the vibe, but it’s absolutely not required. Leather, latex, rubber, pup gear, scally, drag, skinhead, harness, or just jeans and a hoodie all work perfectly well.
The crowd will be mixed too. While the archive leans heavily into homo-male fetish history, the event welcomes all genders and communities who are curious about the culture.
There’ll also be two bars open all afternoon, including the wonderfully named Badass Leather Bar, which is hosting a reunion celebrating the legendary Backstreet Club.
A Rare Look Behind the Curtain
Fetish culture is usually something you encounter late at night in clubs or parties. Seeing it unpacked, explored and celebrated in a historic London institute is something else entirely.
Whether you’re a full-time leather enthusiast or just a bit curious about the scene, Fetish Unlimited promises a fascinating, playful and surprisingly educational afternoon.
