If there’s one thing you can rely on in this city, it’s that SH!T Theatre will always come back swinging, singing and possibly wearing something held together with safety pins. After five long years away, the iconic duo return with Evita Too, and honestly, it’s like someone handed your favourite chaotic queer aunties a stage, a Prosecco and a political biography and said, “Go on then, see what happens.”
What happens is brilliant.
Becca and Louise, the award-winning minds behind SH!T Theatre, have never been shy of poking at politics, pop culture and the general weirdness of being alive. This new show pushes all of that to delirious heights. Evita Too isn’t quite a biographical retelling of Isobel Perón, and it’s not quite a parody either. It’s more like holding a cracked mirror up to a woman who has been mythologised, memorialised and merchandised to oblivion, and letting her talk back for once. If she’s annoyed. And also drunk. And possibly possessed by the ghost of every diva who came after her.
The Purcell Room will become part cabaret, part séance, part chaotic history lesson, and part “what happens when two queer theatre-makers decide the West End has had it too easy for too long”. Expect music, messy sincerity, big opinions and an energy that feels like it could fall apart at any moment, but never does. That’s their magic. You watch thinking, “This shouldn’t work”, while fully knowing it’s working better than half the polished shows charging triple the price.
There’s always heart in SH!T Theatre’s work, hidden between the punchlines and the glitter. Evita Too digs into power, legacy, womanhood, queerness and myth-making, but in that totally disarming SH!T Theatre way that feels like a pub conversation with your funniest mates who suddenly drop a truth bomb so real you need a moment. And then they crack another joke. And then they start singing. You never quite know where it’s going, but that’s exactly why the whole thing feels electric.
Whether you’re a die-hard SH!T Theatre fan, an Evita obsessive, or simply someone who likes their culture served with edge, camp and a wink, this is the perfect winter treat. London’s theatre scene needs more chaos, more honesty and more queer imagination. And the girls are delivering all three in spades.
