This joint venture between Jonathan Harvey and the Pet Shop Boys makes a long-awaited return this Autumn!
One is a writer behind cult gay shows Beautiful Thing and Gimme Gimme Gimme, the other is the most successful musical duo in history with more than 100 million records sold — it’s fair to say there were high hopes for MUSIK, the collaboration between Jonathan Harvey and the Pet Shop Boys, when it premiered back in 2019.
Fortunately, it was a theatrical triumph and one that’s getting a second outing this October at the Wilton’s Music Hall. The one-woman musical tells the story of Billie Trix (played by Frances Barber), a powerhouse rockstar and drug addict who had a knack for managing to end up in the most interesting historic locations, from post-war Berlin to Andy Warhol’s Factory — as well as 10 years in a Soho Square phone box.
Harvey first wrote the character of Trix in his 2001 West End musical Closer to Heaven, but he decided she had more than enough about her to be worthy of her own show. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe contributed six original songs to go alongside this new script, including Friendly Fire and Ich bin Musik. And where better for a reprisal of this show than the beautiful and atmospheric Wilton’s Music Hall, which has its own long and illustrious history to rival Billie Trix’s.
Ticket sales have been more than healthy since the announcement, so don’t hesitate if you want to see this outrageous show dreamt up by two heavyweights in queer culture.
