DJ OF THE MONTH: Terry Trexstasy from The Boy Is Mine

Hi Terry, so tell us a bit about your DJ journey so far.

I started DJing at 16 for a school disco before moving on to host club nights in Cardiff with friends. Over the years, I’ve played at numerous major venues and party nights across London, the UK, and internationally, taking the stage in places like Europe, the USA, and even Thailand’s famous Full Moon Parties. I had a residency at Heaven Nightclub for over twenty years, too. I love house, disco, and soul, but my latest venture is The Boy is Mine, a night focused on R&B.

What’s a song that sums up The Boy Is Mine?

You can probably guess! The vibe of the Brandy and Monica track is sexy, sassy, positive, and uplifting. It’s the perfect example of the vibrant energy and confident spirit that characterized that era in music.
Give us a record you’ve fallen in love with from the past year.

Teddy Swims ‘Lose Control’ is my favourite R&B song of 2024! It just got my attention the moment I heard it — haunting vocals, stripped down beats, it’s simply stunning. I suppose the best music grips you and makes you feel something, evoking feelings and memories. I’ve had it on heavy rotation at home, at the gym and in the car.

And what’s an oldie that never fails to please?

There are so many songs of the classic era that pop into my mind so I’ll just say the first three that come to mind — TLC ‘No Scrubs’, Whitney Houston ‘It’s Not Right But It’s OK’ and Destiny’s Child ‘Jumpin’ Jumpin’’.

Which artist do you turn to when a dancefloor needs bringing to life?

There are lots of artists I can go to when it comes to R&B, old and new, so to name a few — Aaliyah, Janet Jackson, TonI Braxton, and Mariah Carey are always safe bets, as are some more recent artists like SZA, Janelle Monet, or Tinashe.

Do you have a guilty pleasure when it comes to music?

Hmm, I like a lot of different music and can find joy in all kinds. I personally think there’s good music and bad music, so why waste your time listening to bad music? That being said, one person’s trash is another person’s gold. I’ll just say Britney Spears and let’s leave it there…
