For July, it’s the turn of one of the DJs who oversees JamieHP’s legendary SBN parties every Sunday — that’s Stark Bollock Naked for those of you not in the know.. it’s DJ Slaynee
Tell us about your DJ journey so far.
I used to DJ on the straight scene and run my own events, but it all stopped when life got in the way. Now, here I am starting again with a different audience. My aim is to bring the cool back to the dance floor. I try to be unpredictable while always selecting songs that work well on the dance floor. For me, it’s about being unique, edgy and cutting-edge, playing the best of the best. Two words to sum me up: bass and vocal!
What song sums up Jamie HP events?
It’s a hard question to answer, as I’m not the only DJ there. But there is a song that, when I play it, always gets people bouncing and that’s Last Night by Loofy. You can find this playing in most of my sets on mixcloud.com/slaynee.dj. It’s from the minimal tech house genre. It’s simple and non-offensive with a captivating, dreamy vocal layered on top of a pulsing bassline. It sounds amazing in the clubs, it really creates a vibe that gets people excited.
Give us a record you’ve recently fallen in love with.
I have two to share. The first is a disco-house record, Easy My Mind by Chris Lake. It’s a top track I play all the time. It has a lovely male vocal, well-arranged musical instruments and a bassline that makes you want to keep dancing. You can play it for over five minutes and still want more. I always let this track play until the end.
The other is a melodic techno song — the ALOK remix of Focus by John Summit. My god, I’ve never had a song that I’ve played to myself so much. I think I played it ten times in one day. For some reason, it hits my emotions. It gets me excited and brings an energy to the room. It really sets the place on fire. The lyrics are outstanding and sung so well.
And what’s an oldie that never fails to please?
Again, hard to answer, as I tend to play new music released in the last couple of years. I want to be someone you come to so you can hear what’s new and fresh.
What artist do you turn to when the dance floor needs bringing back to life?
This is easy — Chris Lake. I play at least five of his songs in every set at SBN and at least two in every Mixcloud mix I record. I’ve started to make my own music and he really inspires me, but I try my hardest not to copy as I want my own unique sound. This is important to me.
When can we catch you playing next?
At SBN, I play the first Sunday of every month. I have a three-hour set, so I can be more creative with what I play, rather than squeezing it all into one hour. I really get to showcase my diverse style of music. I also cover Lee Harris when he can’t play some weekends due to a busy schedule.
I hope other promoters give me a chance and see what fresh new vibes I bring. I would like to maybe have my own night one day to give the gay scene some variety. We always used to be at the cutting edge of music — are we still there?
