We’ve packed this one tighter than a Vauxhall cloakroom on New Year’s Eve, so settle in. There’s a lot to unwrap.
Our cover star this month isn’t a person, but a place – Ku Bar, the beloved queer institution turning thirty. There’s something wonderfully sentimental about realising how many Londoners had their first gay night out under those lights, and how many memories (good, messy, and downright legendary) have been made from Charing Cross Road to its home now on Lisle Street. The anniversary party on 6 December is shaping up to be pure mayhem with queens old and new, more fizz than your liver deserves, and a dance floor that’ll be packed with three decades of Ku kids. Then there’s New Year’s Eve, which Ku is treating like its own sparkly sequel: a Red Affair running until 5am, designed for people who refuse to go gently into January.
But December isn’t just about partying; it’s also about pulse-checking the community. Our In The Know pages do exactly that. INFERNO and several other nightlife collectives band together for a powerful campaign about the pressure queer venues are under, reminding us that nightlife isn’t frivolous – it’s foundational. Add in the LGBT Foundation’s Man Enough campaign, starring our very own Agony Adam, and it’s clear the conversation around identity, masculinity and visibility is very much alive. And if your tastes lean toward something a bit more exhibitionist, Naked Boys Reading returns after six long years away, proving you really can improve literature by removing the trousers.
This month, Jason Reid delivers one of his most powerful pieces yet. Marking twenty years since he survived AIDS-defining illness, he reflects on treatment, trauma, healing and the responsibility of remembrance. It’s tender, angry, hopeful and full of hard-won wisdom – a reminder that queer history isn’t dusty, it’s lived, every day, by people in our community.
We stay on that theme of community with a full festive love letter to The Old Ship in Limehouse. Time Out recently named it one of the top 50 pubs in London, but regulars already knew that. The Old Ship is the sort of place where the drag is loud, the laughter is real, and no one drinks alone unless they want to. December’s cabaret line-up is deliciously chaotic, with Queera Lynn, Mrs Moore, Sandra and an entire month of Christmas-fuelled nonsense. There’s no resisting it, even if you pretend you’re the sort of person who has “quiet Decembers.”
Meanwhile, London’s nightlife is determined to squeeze in as much fun as possible before the year ends. Tonker makes a triumphant one-night resurrection at Eagle London, XXL storms back with a New Year’s Eve takeover up in Tottenham, and panto season is in full, filthy swing. Beauty and the Beast: A Horny Love Story at the Charing Cross Theatre is gleefully stupid in all the right ways, while Boys in the Buff promises equal parts comedy, heart and unabashed nudity. From cabaret to club nights to kink – this city delivers.
