Before we dive into the messy divorce of LGB and TQ+, let me properly introduce myself. Hello! My name’s Alexis Blake and I am a transgender woman who shares her life, stories, and opinions on social media and now and again in here!
First of all, where is this coming from? Over the last 5 years, I have started to see some of the LGB starting to distance themselves from the TQ+ due to the negative press and bad reputation the Trans and Non-binary community is getting.
So why the bad press? To sum up in a nutshell the Trans and Non-binary community are first of all being used as political warfare to get politicians’ votes. Stigmatising Trans women is a device many politicians are using as they can use the prejudice some people in society have to get supporters, it’s that simple. Mix that with the outspoken and radical trans/non-binary ‘activists’ we are all seeing online and combined that equals a bad reputation for the TQ+. Please note I use the word ‘activists’ there loosely.
So where do Lesbians, gays, and bisexual people fit into this? In all honesty, I am pretty sure they are getting tired of being dragged into this negative narrative. After our LGBTQ+ ancestors fought so hard for equality and to be treated fairly by society they are just over the drama. I think some feel like they need to disconnect from trans and non-binary people to not get the same bad reputation.
It breaks my heart to see the community that once was so strong and together… crumbling. Not that I blame LGB however. I just want to take this time to remind those individuals of something. Not all trans people are like the ones we see screaming on Tiktok, many of us just want a ‘normal’ life and to fit in with society. Yet, social media, politicians, and anti-trans people would have you believe otherwise.
Looking back at Stonewall and the earliest pride marches I see the fight those trans women had in them because they had to. They had to loudly protest and fight back against police brutality to survive and demand the trans rights we have today. I think today’s society is so different from that, and screaming and shouting isn’t the way to find acceptance- it, in fact, does the exact opposite of that.
Politicians may be coming for trans people right now but, they will soon run out of negative things to say about us and where will they turn next? Of course, the rest of our rainbow community. They chose trans women first as it’s an easy group to target (plus the crazy ones online don’t help). So where do we go now you might ask? In all honesty, I do not know, and I am getting increasingly worried. They are coming after trans rights bit by bit and the future is unknown. What I do know is, that most trans people are like you and I, with hearts and feelings. Not just a screaming monster on your screen.
