London theatre loves a show that isn’t afraid of a tricky conversation, and Aggy at Park Theatre walks straight into that territory.
Written by Paul Bradshaw, the play digs into gender, identity and the awkward, sometimes complicated reality of how we talk about those things in real life. It’s sharp, funny, occasionally uncomfortable and very recognisable if you’ve ever found yourself mid-conversation thinking, “Oh god… how do we navigate this one?”
Bradshaw’s writing has always had a knack for capturing the bits of life that feel slightly too honest for polite company. His characters don’t deliver neat little speeches. They interrupt each other, say the wrong thing, backtrack, laugh at the wrong moment and occasionally land on something surprisingly truthful.
That honesty is exactly what makes Aggy feel so alive.
The production is directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair, a hugely respected theatre-maker who identifies as non-binary. That perspective brings a real sense of authenticity to a play already rooted in questions around gender identity and how we understand ourselves.
What’s refreshing is that Aggy doesn’t try to explain gender politics or present tidy answers. Instead, it leans into the confusion, humour and tension that comes with people genuinely trying to understand each other.
There are moments that will make you laugh, moments that might make you wince a bit, and others where the audience will probably recognise something painfully familiar on stage.
Park Theatre has built a reputation for championing bold new writing, and this production fits neatly into that tradition. It’s thoughtful, funny and very much rooted in the world we’re living in right now.
