Canal Cafe Theatre presents: Zumba Gold

Award-winning Canal Café Theatre has been perched on the edge of the Regent’s Canal since the 70’s . It is a renowned comedy, cabaret and theatre venue and over the years has helped launch some of the biggest names in Comedy ranging from John Oliver to the League of Gentlemen to Miranda Hart.

Other notable comedians to have trodden the boards of the Canal include Eddie Izzard, The Mighty Boosh, Catherine Tate and Dara O’Briain to name but a few. In 2002, an in-house production of Lucky Stiff made history by being the only Fringe Theatre production to be nominated in the Whatsonstage Awards for Best Musical Revival in the same category as the likes of Kiss Me Kate and My Fair Lady in the West End.

The dysfunctional dance party you didn’t know you needed: follow Cathy following her dreams by any means necessary, because when life gets you down what else is there to do but dance?

Zumba Gold is Amelia Gann’s writing debut, first performed in June 2021 at The Pleasance, London, as part of their Fringe Future’s Festival in collaboration with The Vaults. It was selected as part of a week of theatre curated by artist Paula Varjack under the title ‘The Future is Pop Culture’ .

Development of the piece began at the end of 2020, after a year where lockdowns and isolation made a career in the arts seem even more unattainable. When life as we know it was put on pause, what else could we do but find moments of joy wherever possible? For Amelia this included a lot of dancing in the mirror, and so the fever dream of Cathy the Zumba instructor on a quest for life fulfillment through dance was born. Obviously.

Zumba Gold is a lovechild of 2020, pop nostalgia, queer identity and suburban village life. So it’s only right that Cathy herself is messy, dramatic, desperate, confused, entitled, and kind of scary – but we still want her to succeed? Do we?

Zumba Gold is Showing at the Canal Cafe Theatre this July.
